Driver on the Wing’s Weather for QPR v Chelsea

It will turn a little colder this weekend but it is all relative. A little colder means 8 degrees as opposed to 12 or 13 which is unseasonably mild. 8 degrees just about average for this time of year and so it is fair to say that our curiously mild winter continues. The second week of February, still a week or two away, is, on average, the coldest week of the year. If we can keep warm until then, we may be in for a winter of record and alarmist newspaper stories about global warming and climate change. We are also likely then to be in for a drought this summer with hose pipe bans and more hysteria in the Daily Mail. Then again, everything could change suddenly. Snow could fall as late as Easter.

So, 8 degrees and sun on Saturday for the noon kick off against QPR at their tumble down ground. Winds from the west North West at around 12 mph should not have much effect on the game or the journey to it. Sun rise at 7:46am and sunset at 4:42pm will mean daylight before and after the game. There is a UV index, although at 1, it is unlikely to lead to a need for sunscreen.

The days are starting to get longer, the worst of the winter may be behind us. Now is the time to look forward with hope.

The slight chill in the air on Saturday does mean that one should wrap up reasonably warmly. It is certainly not t-shirt weather. Please don’t “do a scouser” and wear a silly Suarez-style t-shirt proclaiming your loyalty to England’s captain. Such antics will only attract negative media attention and could adversely affect the position. Better to take a lead from JT himself and rise above the situation. Declare your support for him as England’s captain vocally and ignore those who would do him harm.

Talking of ignoring people, I am tempted not to waste internet space with my views of the  little chippy non entities with their pale skin who are QPR supporters. I succumb to the temptation.

Instead there is a subject that I do want to address and that is those silly woollen hats designed to look like animal heads. The ones with the noses and ears knitted into them. A couple of years ago, I saw one on a little kid and it looked cute and amusing. I then saw one on the head of a young woman and it looked amusing in an ironic way. Since then they have multiplied. Sadly, jokes that are retold, cease to be amusing, particularly when the teller of the joke doesn’t really understand it and cannot tell it well, occasionally even missing the punch line. The same is true of joke hats or any other joke clothing. The first time one see it, if it is presented well, it is amusing. The thousandth retelling does not merit a laugh.

They are not stylish. They are not amusing. They probably are not very warm or comfortable. You are not a bear. You are not a dog. Your girlfriend is not a bear either. Don’t wear one. Don’t allow your girlfriend to wear one. Not if you bring her to football.

Remember, you are Chelsea and Chelsea is style.
